Hawaiian Weirdness
I have had people ask me if I was this or that, (Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Hawaiian, Taiwanese, half-black, etc) but it hasn't happened much in the past month (prolly cuz I've been staying in a lot more). Today, I went to get some pampering done at a spa, and the lady who did my facial asked me if I was Hawaiian, and of course I said no... and then later on in the appointment, I was getting my toes done, and the pedicurist, another woman, (if that's a word) asked me the same thing... if I was Hawaiian. Again, I said no. And then tonight, when I pulled up to the security gate at work... the same little old lady who always takes down my name and license plate # suddenly commented that my last named looked Hawaiian or Polynesian, and that I looked Hawaiian. I politely told her I wasn't.. and she said... well, you look like you might be Hawaiian... and then she got weird and said... so can you teach me how to do this? She suddenly broke out in a hula dance (old lady style)... and I was said... "Sorry to disappoint you, but I can't do that" :) And this was going on while I was in a HURRY to get to work.. I didn't have time to watch some silly security guard hula dance in front of me, especially since I wasn't Hawaiian! Anyway... I thought it was really weird to hear something like that 3 times in one day... guess I need to get out more. I don't look Hawaiian in the least bit... and I sure haven't changed anything about my face lately that would make me look it. I have absolutely nothing in my bloodline that would be considered Hawaiian... not even Japanese (as far as I know). Strange coincidences. I'm sure this happens to lots of Asians though... at least I don't hear "Are you Chinese?" that much anymore. That gets old. Heh.
