Gummo: We discovered this movie tonight while looking for something different to watch. It's sort of a hard movie to describe... just looking at the cover you could tell it was going to be a weird movie. Plus, it was by the same creator as the ever so controversial Kids so I figure it was probably going to be a little unsettling to watch. So, without getting too into it, I think I'm going to share a few words about what you'll see in this movie if you've never seen it before.

- A real sad, raw, and somewhat realistic look at "white trash" (hope that doesn't offend anyone, but I really couldn't think of any other word for it)

- Plenty of cat killin' by kids

- Lots of foul language coming out of the mouths of amazingly young actors (like pre-adolescents)

- Sexual exploitation of a person with Down's Syndrome

- Glue sniffing

- Kids using pellet guns on animals and such

- Poor or lack of good parenting and its effects

- No plot really

Basically, it's another odd concoction of a movie with about as much shock value as Kids, if not more. It's difficult and upsetting to watch if you accept it as a reality, even if it's not your own.

Gummo makes you feel appreciative of what you have in your life -- heck, it probably makes homeless feel good about their lives. At the same time, I hope it makes people realize how important it is to have higher standards in their own lives. I know it's probably hard to feel ambitious when you feel like you'll be stuck in a small town your whole life, but in order for there to be some change, you have to put up some effort.

I've never seen such a sad, trashy place, but I do know of areas that are beginning to start looking like it and that's scary. This movie takes place in an old, primarily white town in Ohio that had been devastated by a tornado, and basically you are watching how people have moved on since. I get the feeling things weren't really any different before that tornado. I don't see or hear of other tornado strucken towns turning into a community full of rowdy, unruly, drunken bums. Then again, this is fiction, so I didn't take it too seriously. :P

Watch this movie if you're willing to spare an hour and a half of your time praying that you never have to live a life like theirs. I don't think most of us will, anyway.
