Chris and I have been wracking our brains on this oddity for the past couple nights... we even brought it up to this local convenience store and that baffled many of the customers and the staff in there... in fact they said never to bring anything like that in there again. :P
So... I'm going to try asking someone here who will hopefully explain to me what Euclidean theory this picture below is disproving, and explain how it is possible to have two triangles of the same general shape, but when you switch places of the two internal triangles, it creates an extra square unit or area. I understand it the area of the two odd shapes is different in each picture... one having one more square unit than the other, but I still want a clearer explanation of why and how this is possible. Where does this extra space come from? I tried to look up some information about it since I assumed it was a common mind-boggling image, but had no luck. SO PLEASE... someone email me if you have learned about this in school or something... or have some amazing insight on this weird perplexity.
