Today (Sunday Evening), we went over to my mom's house to pay my fambly a visit. While we were there, Michelle (turning 20 this Tuesday) brought up my dad's rather unintentional sense of humor when it came to picking out birthday cards for her. Last year, he gave her a birthday card that was actually meant for a step-daughter! The card had pre-printed in there something like "I wish I could have been there from the beginning... blah blah blah... like you were my own daughter"... I laughed my butt off. My dad does speak English, but I think he understands it a little differently since his primary language is Vietnamese... I can see how he may have not caught onto what type of card he picked out.

This year, my dad sent Michelle a birthday card a little early since he was leaving to go out of the country for over a month. The front of the birthday card had a picture of a black family celebrating a girl's birthday, and the text on the outside read "Happy Birthday, Girl!"...The inside had some typical birthday message... At first, I didn't really catch it either.. but then when I thought about it... I laughed so hard... the type of card he gave her was meant for a black girl... you know... like.. "You go, girl"... "Happy birthday.. girl". On the back of the card it mentioned something about some African symbol, too. Heheh. It wasn't hard to figure out why my daddy chose that card though. He always addresses us as "girl".. like "Hi Girl"... "Hello Girl" But he says "girl" more like "gur"... so I guess a card that said "Happy Birthday, Girl" appeared to make perfect sense to my dad. Heh... too funny. My dad probably didn't even know how funny that was to us. We'll have to tell him when he comes back home.
